PlaintiffStack vs Hona
PlaintiffStack vs Hona: an AI agent that texts PI clients through treatment, or client updates on the same record as the case. Who fits which.
The short answer
Hona automates client follow-up for PI firms: its AI agent, Lia, texts clients through treatment, logs visits and flags gaps, on top of the case system a firm already uses. PlaintiffStack is the case system, with a portal and shared inbox on the same record, but no AI texting: a person sends every message. Firms wanting treatment check-ins at scale should look hard at Hona.

Choose Hona if
- You run a PI practice with hundreds of clients in treatment and want an AI agent checking in after every visit.
- You want missed appointments and treatment gaps caught from what clients report, not only from records.
- You're staying on Filevine, Clio, CASEpeer, Litify or SmartAdvocate and want updates without changing platforms.
- You want an AI receptionist answering calls after hours in many languages.
- You practice outside California.
Choose PlaintiffStack if
- You want a person to send every message to a client, with each one logged to the case.
- You're ready to move off your current case system and want client updates on the same record as the work.
- You practice workers' comp or employment as well as PI in California and want one platform for all three.
- You want the case work itself: records reports, chronologies, demand drafts and settlement statements.
What Hona is
Hona describes itself as an AI case manager for personal injury firms. It began as client communication software, was founded in 2021 in Orem, Utah, went through Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch, and raised a $9.5 million Series A in June 2024 led by Costanoa Ventures, with Ludlow Ventures, Soma Capital and Y Combinator. It says more than 500 firms use it, reaching about 300,000 plaintiffs.
Like Case Status, Hona works alongside a case management system rather than replacing one. It connects with Filevine, Clio, MyCase, CASEpeer, Litify and SmartAdvocate, among others, and firms enroll clients without leaving their case system.
What it does well
Hona's center is Lia, an AI agent for the treatment phase of a PI case. Once a client is enrolled, Lia texts them within minutes, maps their treatment, sends appointment reminders, and checks in after each visit about attendance, symptoms and providers. Missed appointments, treatment gaps and clients who go quiet are flagged to staff under escalation rules the firm writes in plain language, and a case manager can step into any conversation or call from the dashboard.
Its client portal shows a visual case tracker, explainer videos and an activity thread, and firms can send phase-change texts, drip campaigns and two-way messages. Hona also sells a Voice AI receptionist that answers calls in 31 languages and starts intake, and a leads product. Hona's FAQ puts implementation at about two weeks, and its site lists HIPAA, TCPA and SOC 2 Type II.
Where PlaintiffStack is different
PlaintiffStack is case management with client updates on the same record. Its client portal is a private link in the firm's colors with no app or account, showing the case stage in plain words as the case moves, the case manager, and what the firm needs. Clients upload documents and answer forms from a phone browser. Communicate logs texts from the firm's numbers, calls and case email to the case in one shared inbox.
The difference that matters most against Hona is who sends the message. In PlaintiffStack, a person does:
- There is no AI agent texting clients. Flows in Automate add tasks, drafts and checks, and never send messages on their own.
- An incoming text is not an automation trigger. A client's text becomes a suggested task that a person accepts.
- There is no AI receptionist, and intake has no automatic capture from web forms or ads.
PlaintiffStack's PI morning checks do flag treatment gaps, expiring offers and demands, and untouched record requests, but they work from the case file, not from texting the client. If you want an agent that checks in after every physical therapy visit, Hona does that and PlaintiffStack does not.
The work after the update
Where PlaintiffStack goes further is the case itself. A PI case builds a missing records report, a treatment chronology and a policy-limits demand draft, and ends in a settlement statement with lien reductions. Agents read searchable PDFs, Word and text files and propose facts, deadlines and tasks for a person to accept, and drafts cite the page each fact came from. There is no OCR yet, so scanned records and faxes are not read.
The same record serves California workers' comp and employment cases with their own tools, such as the WC benefits audit and the employment legal chronology. Hona's focus is PI.
Cost
Hona does not publish prices; its site invites firms to ask about pricing and contract terms on a demo. PlaintiffStack is $250 per case with every app included, no monthly fee and no long lock-in contract. AI usage is billed separately, and a tool shows its estimated cost before it runs on a case. See pricing.
Who fits which
Hona fits a PI firm that is staying on its case management system and wants treatment-phase follow-up handled by AI at scale. It also serves firms outside California. PlaintiffStack fits a California PI, WC or employment firm that wants client updates, communication and case work on one record, with a person sending every message. See Case Status vs Hona for the two side by side, and the personal injury page for what PlaintiffStack does on a PI case.
Questions firms ask
Hona's AI agent for the PI treatment phase. Once a client is enrolled, Lia texts them, sends appointment reminders, checks in after visits about attendance, symptoms and providers, and flags missed appointments and treatment gaps to staff under the firm's escalation rules.
Hona went through Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch and announced a $9.5 million Series A in June 2024, led by Costanoa Ventures with Ludlow Ventures, Soma Capital and Y Combinator.
No. A person sends every text from PlaintiffStack, and Automate flows never send messages on their own. The client portal does update itself, showing the case stage in plain words as the case moves.
Yes, from the case file: PI morning checks flag treatment gaps, untouched record requests and expiring offers and demands. Agents read searchable PDFs, Word and text files; there is no OCR, so scanned records aren't read. PlaintiffStack doesn't text clients to ask whether they made an appointment.
Hona lists integrations with Filevine, Clio, MyCase, CASEpeer, Litify and SmartAdvocate, among others. PlaintiffStack is itself a case management system, so it replaces rather than connects to one.
