Client updatesReviewed

PlaintiffStack vs Case Status

PlaintiffStack vs Case Status: a branded client app layered on your case system, or client updates on the same record as the case. Who fits which.

The short answer

Case Status is a polished client communication layer: a branded app, automated status updates, AI triage, translation and reply drafts, and satisfaction tracking, on top of most major case systems. PlaintiffStack is the case system, with a portal and shared inbox on the same record, but people send every message. Firms staying on their platform will find Case Status the natural add-on.

Choose Case Status if

  • You're staying on your case management system and want to add client updates without changing platforms.
  • You want routine status messages automated, with AI drafting replies your staff review and send.
  • Many clients prefer a language other than English, and you want messages translated in the app.
  • You want satisfaction measured at every stage of the case.
  • You practice outside California, or in immigration, disability or other practices across several states.

Choose PlaintiffStack if

  • You're ready to move off your current case system and want client updates on the same record as the work.
  • You want a person to send every message to a client, logged to the case.
  • You want every resolved client asked for a review the same way, by text or call.
  • You practice PI, workers' comp or employment in California and want case tools, not only a communication layer.
  • You'd rather pay one price per case than add a communication subscription.

What Case Status is

Case Status is a client communication platform for law firms. Lauren Sturdivant, a former personal injury lawyer, and Andy Seavers cofounded it in 2017, and Seavers is CEO. It is based in Charleston, South Carolina. It has raised several rounds, most recently a $19.7 million Series B announced in October 2024, led by Grayhawk Capital and Topmark Partners. It says more than 500 firms use it.

Case Status doesn't replace case management. It sits on top of the system a firm already runs, including Clio, Filevine, Litify, SmartAdvocate, Assembly Neos, CASEpeer, MyCase, Smokeball, PracticePanther, MerusCase and Docketwise, and syncs with it.

What it does well

Clients get a branded app with the firm's logo and colors, opened from a text message without a password. They see where the case stands and what comes next, message the team, scan and upload documents, and watch short videos that explain each phase.

On the firm's side, Case Status puts AI on the message queue. It summarizes long messages, flags urgent ones, triages cases as red, yellow or green, translates messages across more than 140 languages, and drafts replies in the firm's tone for staff to review and send. Its newer Experience Operating System adds calls logged to the case, an insights agent called Seer, and review tools in beta.

It also measures satisfaction. Case Status asks a Net Promoter Score question at each stage and makes the review request to clients who score 9 or 10. It has pages for personal injury, workers' comp, employment, immigration, disability, mass tort, estate planning and criminal law.

Where PlaintiffStack is different

PlaintiffStack is the case management system, with client updates on the same record. The client portal is a private link in any phone browser, in the firm's colors, with no app or account. It shows the case stage in plain words, updated as the case moves, who the case manager is and what the firm needs. Clients upload PDFs, images and Word files that file to the case, and answer forms the firm builds.

Communicate puts texts from the firm's numbers, logged calls and case email in one shared inbox, with each thread assigned to a case and a person. Reputation enrolls clients from resolved cases in a review campaign by text, call or both, and every client gets the same link, so the firm never screens who is asked.

The honest gaps:

  • No automated client texting. The portal updates itself, but a person sends every message. Flows in Automate never send messages on their own.
  • An incoming text is not an automation trigger. A client's text becomes a suggested task that a person accepts.
  • No native app, no message translation and no satisfaction scoring built in.
  • The portal does not accept TIFF or HEIC uploads.

One record instead of a sync

The trade is integration against consolidation. Case Status works with whichever supported case system you run, so you keep your platform and add a communication layer. PlaintiffStack replaces the platform, so there is nothing to sync, and the person answering a client's text sees the case's deadlines, documents and drafts in the same place. Its Draft assistant can write a client update letter from the case file for a person to review.

For California PI, WC and employment firms, that record also carries each practice's phases, case tools and morning checks. Agents read searchable PDFs, Word and text files and propose facts, deadlines and tasks for a person to accept. There is no OCR yet, so scans and faxes are not read.

Cost and security

Case Status publishes no price list; its pricing link leads to product demos. PlaintiffStack is $250 per case with every app included, client updates among them, no monthly fee and no long lock-in contract. AI usage is billed separately.

Case Status says its controls are SOC 2 Type II certified. PlaintiffStack's SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 are in progress. It signs a business associate agreement with every firm before client data arrives and keeps client data, models included, in one US AWS account. See security.

Who fits which

Case Status fits a firm that is staying on its case management system and wants automated, branded client updates, AI help on the message queue and satisfaction tracking. PlaintiffStack fits a California plaintiff firm ready to move its cases, which wants client updates on the same record as the work and a person behind every message.
