PlaintiffStack vs Smokeball

PlaintiffStack vs Smokeball: practice management with trust accounting, AutoTime and Archie AI, or one California plaintiff record at $250 per case.

The short answer

Smokeball is a polished practice management system for small and mid-size firms, strong on document automation, automatic time capture, trust accounting and Word and Outlook, with ISO 27001 certification and an agentic Archie AI. It isn't a plaintiff volume platform. PlaintiffStack brings California PI, comp and employment case tools on one record, but no trust accounting and fewer integrations.

What each is built for

Smokeball is practice management for small and mid-size firms. It is known for document automation and forms, AutoTime (automatic time tracking), billing and trust accounting, and tight Word and Outlook integration. It says more than 34,000 legal professionals use it. In 2026 it rebuilt its AI assistant, Archie, to run multi-step tasks inside matters, Word and Outlook, with apps for chronologies, audio transcription and bank statement analysis.

PlaintiffStack is a plaintiff platform for California firms, with personal injury, workers' comp and employment built in.

What Smokeball does well

  • The business side. Trust accounting and reporting start on its first plan, and AutoTime records time as people work. PlaintiffStack has no trust accounting and no time billing focus.
  • Microsoft 365. Word and Outlook integration runs through every plan, and Archie now works inside both.
  • Templates. Practice area templates, calculators and automated forms from the Grow plan.
  • Security. Smokeball is ISO 27001 certified, hosts on AWS, isolates each firm's data and says it doesn't give customer data to third parties for AI training.

If your firm bills hourly in some matters, needs trust accounting and works mostly in Word and Outlook, Smokeball covers that well.

Where plaintiff firms need more

Smokeball's PI support comes from templates, Archie and partners: Novo for chronologies and demand packages, YoCierge for records retrieval. PlaintiffStack's PI cases include treatment, providers, records, demand and coverage, and lien pages; a missing records report, a treatment chronology and a policy-limits demand; and morning checks for expiring offers and demands, record requests untouched for three weeks, and treatment gaps.

California comp and employment are where the gap is widest. PlaintiffStack's comp cases include a benefits audit of TD periods and late payments, QME and WCAB pages, WCAB petition drafting and IMR deadline checks. Employment cases include a legal chronology of protected activity and adverse actions, a wage and penalty audit and right-to-sue filing deadline checks. Smokeball doesn't describe California-specific workflows for either.

In PlaintiffStack, agents propose facts, deadlines and tasks with the page they came from, and a person accepts each one. Each run shows an estimated cost first, typically cents, and usage is billed separately as part of your quote. One limit: PlaintiffStack doesn't read scanned records or faxes yet.

Price and contract

Smokeball's US prices are by quote. Capterra lists Bill at $49 and Boost at $89 per user per month; Grow and Prosper+ are quoted, and Archie AI is an add-on on most plans. Smokeball's Australian pricing is based on a 36-month contract, so ask about US term length before you sign.

PlaintiffStack is $250 per case, every app included, no monthly fee and no long lock-in contract. A general practice with few plaintiff cases may find Smokeball cheaper; a volume plaintiff firm should compare the cost per case with the cost calculator and per-case vs per-seat guide.

Switching

PlaintiffStack moves your cases, contacts and documents and checks the result with you before you switch. Plan where trust accounting and time billing will live first; the switching guide has a checklist.

Questions to ask on the demo

  1. Show a PI case from intake to settlement. Which steps are built in, and which come from a partner or an add-on?
  2. Draft a chronology from the same records on each system. Where does each fact come from, and how does a reviewer check it?
  3. What does a year cost with the AI and intake you would actually use?
  4. What is the contract term, and what happens at renewal?
  5. Where will trust accounting and time billing live if we switch?

If most of your firm's work is California plaintiff volume, PlaintiffStack is worth a thirty-minute look on your own case types.
