PlaintiffStack vs MyCase

PlaintiffStack vs 8am MyCase: general practice management from $50 per user with trust accounting and 8am IQ, or one California plaintiff record.

The short answer

8am MyCase is a well-priced general practice system with published plans, trust accounting, payments, texting and an AI assistant that includes OCR on its top plan. It suits small firms that need billing and trust as much as case work. PlaintiffStack is built for California plaintiff volume work, with PI, comp and employment case tools on one record, but without trust accounting or OCR.

Choose MyCase if

  • You need billing, trust accounting and online payments in the same system as your cases.
  • You run several practice areas and want one general platform at a published price.
  • You want OCR on scanned documents today (Advanced plan).
  • You want to start with a free trial and month-to-month billing.
  • You need SOC 2 Type 2 attestation in hand.

Choose PlaintiffStack if

  • You're a California plaintiff volume firm and want PI, comp and employment phases, case tools and checks built in.
  • You want medical chronologies, missing records reports and demands in the product, each fact cited to its page.
  • You want deadline checks that understand California comp and employment: IMR after UR denial, right-to-sue filing deadlines, tolling agreements ending.
  • You want one price per case that includes every app, rather than per-seat tiers.

General practice vs plaintiff practice

8am MyCase is general practice management for small and mid-size firms. Its owner, 8am (formerly AffiniPay), also makes LawPay and 8am CasePeer, the company's PI-specific product. MyCase publishes its prices: Basic $50, Pro $100 and Advanced $130 per user per month billed annually, or $60, $120 and $150 billed monthly.

PlaintiffStack is a plaintiff platform for California firms: personal injury, workers' comp and employment, each with its own phases, pages, case tools and morning checks.

What MyCase does well

  • Money in one place. Time, invoicing, trust accounting and LawPay payments with next-day deposits come in every plan. MyCase Accounting adds three-way trust reconciliation for $39 per user per month. PlaintiffStack has no trust accounting.
  • Client contact. Two-way texting, chat, a call log and intake forms with a legal CRM from Pro.
  • AI with OCR. The 8am IQ Discovery Assistant on Advanced runs OCR on scanned documents, with 5,000 pages per user per month shared across the firm. PlaintiffStack doesn't read scans or faxes yet.
  • Plain pricing. Published tiers, monthly or annual billing, and a free trial without a credit card.
  • Security paperwork. 8am lists current SOC 2 Type 2 and PCI DSS attestations on its trust center.

For a small firm with mixed practice areas and real billing needs, MyCase is a good fit, often at a lower cost than a plaintiff platform. If you're PI-only and like 8am, look at PlaintiffStack vs CasePeer too.

Where PlaintiffStack differs

Plaintiff case tools. MyCase's AI helps write, summarize and search. PI medical chronologies and demands come through a third-party integration. PlaintiffStack's PI cases include a missing records report, a treatment chronology and a policy-limits demand; comp cases include a benefits audit, a QME cover letter and records index and WCAB petition drafting; employment cases include a legal chronology, a wage and penalty audit and a pre-litigation demand. Every fact cites the page it came from, and a person accepts it.

California deadlines. PlaintiffStack's morning checks watch for IMR deadlines after UR denial, civil filing deadlines after a right-to-sue notice, tolling agreements ending, expiring offers and untouched record requests.

Settlement math. PlaintiffStack's settlement statement computes the fee and lien reductions; trust deposits and disbursements stay in your accounting system.

Price

MyCase is per user; PlaintiffStack is $250 per case, every app included, with AI usage billed separately (each run shows an estimate first, typically cents). A five-person firm on MyCase Pro billed annually pays $100 x 5 x 12, or $6,000 a year. The same firm opening 60 cases a year on PlaintiffStack pays $15,000. For a small general practice, MyCase will usually cost less. The case for PlaintiffStack is the plaintiff work it does on each case; weigh that against your own numbers with the cost calculator.

Switching

PlaintiffStack moves your cases, contacts and documents and checks the result with you before you switch. Because PlaintiffStack has no trust accounting, plan where trust will live first; the switching guide covers the rest.

What to check before you decide

  • Mix of work. If plaintiff cases are a small share of your matters, a general system like MyCase is likely the better value. If they are most of your work, the case tools matter more than the seat price.
  • Records. If many records arrive as scans, MyCase Advanced's OCR is a real advantage today.
  • Trust and billing. MyCase handles both; PlaintiffStack handles neither, so you would keep an accounting system.
  • AI. Ask each vendor to produce a chronology from the same set of records and show where each fact came from.

Bring your own case types to both demos. PlaintiffStack's is thirty minutes, booked straight from the site.
