PlaintiffStack vs Clio
PlaintiffStack vs Clio: general practice management with Manage AI and Clio Work, or one California plaintiff record with PI, comp and employment built in.
The short answer
Clio is the most widely used general practice platform, with mature billing and trust accounting, a large app ecosystem, SOC 2 reports and, since buying vLex, a serious AI research product in Clio Work. It isn't built for plaintiff volume work: PI depth comes from an add-on and partners. PlaintiffStack is the opposite trade: California PI, comp and employment built in, but no trust accounting and far fewer integrations.

Choose Clio if
- You need trust accounting and billing inside your practice system.
- You run several practice areas, or offices outside California, and want one general platform.
- You want the widest choice of integrations, including PI chronology and demand partners.
- You want AI legal research across a large case-law library (Clio Work).
- You need SOC 2 reports today.
Choose PlaintiffStack if
- Your firm is a California plaintiff volume practice and wants PI, comp and employment phases, case tools and checks ready on day one.
- You want medical chronologies, missing records reports and demands in the product, citing the page each fact came from, rather than from a partner.
- You'd rather pay $250 per case with every app included than a per-user plan plus quoted add-ons for PI, intake and AI.
- You want morning checks for IMR deadlines, right-to-sue filing deadlines, expiring offers and untouched record requests.
A general platform and a plaintiff platform
Clio is the largest name in practice management for small and mid-size firms. In November 2025 it closed its $1 billion acquisition of vLex and a $500 million Series G at a $5 billion valuation, and it says it now serves about 400,000 legal professionals. Its core product, Clio Manage, handles matters, time, billing and trust accounting for almost any practice area. Clio Grow handles intake, and AI comes in two forms: Manage AI inside Clio Manage, and Clio Work, a research and drafting workspace built on vLex's library.
PlaintiffStack is narrower. It is built for high-volume plaintiff firms in California, with personal injury, workers' comp and employment built in.
What Clio does well
- Money. Time, billing and trust accounting are core to Clio. PlaintiffStack has no trust accounting: it builds the settlement statement and tracks liens, and trust stays in your accounting system.
- Ecosystem. Clio's app directory is one of the largest in legal software, so most tools a firm uses connect.
- Research AI. Clio Work searches more than a billion legal documents from over 110 jurisdictions, and since April 2026 can run multi-step tasks. It is available without Clio Manage.
- Trust paperwork. Clio completes annual SOC 2 Type II and SOC 1 Type II audits.
- Breadth. One system for every practice area and office, in many countries.
For a general practice, or a firm whose plaintiff work is a small share of its matters, Clio is the safer choice. For a direct look at Clio against a plaintiff platform, see Clio vs Filevine.
Where plaintiff firms feel the gap
Buyer guides describe Clio as the best general choice for small firms and note that PI firms often outgrow it. PI depth comes through the Clio for Personal Injury add-on and integrations, and medical chronologies come from partners.
PlaintiffStack's PI cases include treatment, providers, records, demand and coverage, and lien pages, plus a missing records report, a treatment chronology and a policy-limits demand that cite the page each fact came from. Comp cases include a benefits audit, QME and WCAB pages and IMR deadline checks. Employment cases include a legal chronology, a wage and penalty audit and right-to-sue deadline checks. The settlement statement computes the fee and lien reductions.
AI in PlaintiffStack proposes facts, deadlines and tasks for a person to accept. Each tool shows an estimated cost before it runs, typically cents, and usage is billed separately as part of your quote. It doesn't read scanned records or faxes yet.
Price
Clio publishes one price: EasyStart from $49 per user per month. Higher tiers, Manage AI and the PI add-on are quoted, and Clio Grow is an add-on outside Expand. Third-party reports of Manage AI at $39 to $59 per user per month are unverified, and Clio Work's launch price of $199 per user per month has been replaced by a demo. Ask for a quote that lists every add-on.
PlaintiffStack is $250 per case, every app included, no monthly fee and no long lock-in contract. A general practice opening few plaintiff cases may find Clio cheaper; a volume plaintiff firm should run the numbers in the cost calculator and read per-case vs per-seat pricing.
Using both
Some firms keep Clio for billing and trust and run plaintiff cases elsewhere. PlaintiffStack doesn't connect to Clio today, so that means two systems. If you switch fully, we move your cases, contacts and documents and check the result with you before you switch; see the switching guide.
What to check before you decide
- What share of your matters are plaintiff cases, and in which practices? A firm that is mostly plaintiff volume work gets more from a plaintiff platform; a mixed practice may get more from Clio.
- Where will trust accounting and billing live? PlaintiffStack doesn't do either.
- Which add-ons would you need on Clio for PI, intake and AI, and what do they cost together?
- Do you need SOC 2 reports now, or is a BAA, a written security questionnaire and a report in progress enough for your clients and carriers?
A thirty-minute PlaintiffStack demo on your own case types answers most of these quickly.
Questions firms ask
Clio works for many small PI practices, especially with its Clio for Personal Injury add-on and integrations. Buyer guides note that high-volume PI firms often outgrow it. PlaintiffStack is built for California plaintiff volume work, with chronologies, demands and morning checks built in.
No. PlaintiffStack builds the settlement statement, computes the fee and tracks liens and costs, but trust deposits and disbursements stay in your accounting system. Clio has trust accounting built in.
Clio doesn't publish Manage AI pricing; third-party reports of $39 to $59 per user per month are unverified. Clio Work launched at $199 per user per month in October 2025 and is now sold through a demo. PlaintiffStack shows an estimated cost before each AI run and bills usage separately as part of your quote.
PlaintiffStack doesn't connect to Clio today. Some firms keep a separate system for billing and trust; ask us on the demo what that looks like for your firm.
Yes. Clio completes annual SOC 2 Type II and SOC 1 Type II audits. PlaintiffStack's SOC 2 Type II is in progress, with no report yet.
