Workers' comp softwareReviewed
Amber Legal alternatives for plaintiff firms
Amber Legal is AI agent software that works alongside a firm's existing case management for workers' comp firms in California, applicant and defense. Here is what else firms weigh, and what each one is best for.
Why firms look beyond Amber Legal
- It doesn't replace case management, so firms pay for and maintain a separate case system alongside it.
- It covers California workers' comp only; firms with PI or employment cases need other tools for those.
- No client portal is described, so client updates stay in another system.
- Its listed connectors are Neos and Clio among case systems; firms on other systems need to ask about support.
The options
- 1.
PlaintiffStack
Case management and AI on one record- Built for
- High-volume plaintiff firms in California: personal injury, workers' comp and employment
- Price
- $250 per case, every app included, no monthly fee. AI usage is billed separately, with an estimate shown before each run.
- Bottom line
- Our own product, listed first because this is our page. It is young and California-only, and it doesn't read scanned records yet.
- 2.
MerusCase
Cloud case management with built-in billing and California workers' comp filing tools- Built for
- Firms across practice areas, with a long following among workers' comp firms in California
- Price
- Not published by MerusCase. A third-party software directory lists a standard plan at $49 per user per month with a five-user minimum and a 10% annual discount, and estimates setup at $1,000 to $5,000. Treat these as estimates.
- Bottom line
- MerusCase is the comp-focused choice for filing: it is a DWC-authorized JET File vendor, e-files QME panel requests and imports case data from EAMS, and it has billing and trust tracking built in. It describes no built-in AI. PlaintiffStack doesn't e-file to EAMS, but it audits benefits, drafts QME and WCAB documents with page citations and watches comp deadlines, alongside PI and employment.
- 3.
SmartAdvocate
Configurable case management for high-volume litigation, with built-in AI- Built for
- Personal injury, mass tort, workers' comp and other litigation firms that want deep configuration
- Price
- Not published by SmartAdvocate. Capterra lists a starting price of $109 per user per month, and G2 lists an enterprise option starting at $1,995 with a perpetual-license choice. Third-party estimates put implementation at $10,000 to $25,000. Treat these as estimates. SmartIntelligence pricing is not disclosed.
- Bottom line
- SmartAdvocate is a long-established, highly configurable platform with modules for mass torts, workers' comp and more, a large integration list and a new AI layer, SmartIntelligence. PlaintiffStack is younger and narrower, with California PI, comp and employment built in, page-cited AI and a published per-case price. Firms that want to configure everything, across states, will find more room in SmartAdvocate.
- 4.
Eve
AI operating layer for plaintiff firms (EveOS)- Built for
- Plaintiff firms in personal injury, employment, medical malpractice, disability and workers' comp
- Price
- Eve doesn't publish prices; its site directs buyers to a demo. Third-party roundups describe per-seat or enterprise quotes. Get the full cost, including agents and intake, in writing.
- Bottom line
- Eve is a fast-growing, well-funded AI platform for plaintiff firms that covers more practice areas than most, including employment, and sits over your existing case management system. PlaintiffStack is a younger case management platform with AI inside it, built only on California rules. Eve suits firms that want broad AI agents across a national practice; PlaintiffStack suits California firms that want the system of record and its AI in one place at a published price.
- 5.
Filevine
Configurable case management with the LOIS AI suite- Built for
- Law firms of many sizes and practice types, legal teams and agencies, with personal injury among its core markets
- Price
- Not published: Filevine quotes each firm by headcount and modules. Third-party estimates put seats at roughly $65 to $100 per user per month and implementation at $5,000 to $20,000, and comparisons say AI tools such as MedChron are sold as add-ons. A free LOIS tier, LOIS Explore, launched in July 2026.
- Bottom line
- Filevine is a mature, deeply configurable platform with a large partner network, a SOC 2 Type II audit and a fast-growing AI suite. PlaintiffStack is younger and narrower: California PI, workers' comp and employment on one record, page-cited AI and a published per-case price. Choose Filevine for configurability and multi-state reach; choose PlaintiffStack for California depth and a simpler price.
- 6.
Needles and Neos
Personal injury case management from Assembly Software: on-premise Needles and its cloud successor, Neos- Built for
- Personal injury firms, including the large base of firms still running Needles or TrialWorks on their own servers
- Price
- Neos publishes two tiers: Essentials at $109 and Premium at $139 per user per month, billed yearly. Platinum, which includes NeosAI, is quoted, and Demands Plus is an add-on on Platinum whose cost scales with caseload. Third-party listings show other figures (for example $99, $129 and $179), so confirm with Assembly. On-premise Needles pricing is not published.
- Bottom line
- Assembly has built PI case management for over 40 years, and Neos gives Needles firms a familiar path to the cloud, published prices for its first two tiers, OCR and an AI tier with cited chronologies and demands. PlaintiffStack is younger and narrower: California PI, workers' comp and employment on one record, with every app in one per-case price. A national PI firm that likes how Needles works will feel at home in Neos.
Choosing an alternative to Amber Legal
MerusCase for case management with EAMS JET filing, SmartAdvocate for a configurable comp module, and PlaintiffStack for a case system with California comp tools built in.
Amber doesn't list PlaintiffStack among its connectors today. Ask both vendors before planning to run them together.
Whether it reads faxes and scans, whether every fact cites its page, how it handles QME report deadlines and strike windows, whether it trains on your data, and whether it will sign a BAA.
